上海 arrival guide

Shanghai arrival plan for first-time visitors.

First-time visitors who want a smooth soft landing, modern China, food streets, museums, and easy high-speed rail connections.

Arrival airport

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)

PVG is the main international gateway, while SHA is closer to central Shanghai and handles many domestic flights. Before choosing a transfer, confirm the airport code, your arrival time, and whether your hotel is near a metro stop. Your first practical moves are mobile data, Alipay or WeChat Pay readiness, and a clear hotel address in Chinese.

First 24 hours

  • At PVG, use the metro for a predictable budget transfer, the airport bus when it matches your hotel area, or a taxi or Didi when luggage and jet lag matter more than cost.
  • Check in, save the hotel name and address in Chinese, and test one small mobile payment before leaving the neighborhood.
  • Walk the Bund before sunset, then add Nanjing Road or Lujiazui only if you still have energy.
  • Avoid booking a rail day trip, major museum slot, or cross-city restaurant on arrival day after a long Pacific flight.

Starter routes

Choose a realistic first itinerary.

3 days

Classic Shanghai starter

  • Day 1: hotel check-in, payment test, and the Bund at sunset
  • Day 2: Yu Garden area, Old City streets, and Pudong skyline views
  • Day 3: Former French Concession, Wukang Road, and a flexible food evening

5 days

Shanghai plus one rail day

  • Days 1-3: follow the classic Shanghai route without rushing
  • Day 4: People's Square museum time plus Nanjing Road or a riverside walk
  • Day 5: Suzhou by high-speed rail, with station and return train checked in advance

7 days

Shanghai as an eastern China base

  • Days 1-5: Shanghai highlights plus one Suzhou rail day
  • Day 6: Hangzhou as a full-day rail trip, or Zhujiajiao for a lighter outing
  • Day 7: flexible shopping, food, weather backup, or departure preparation

Common mistakes

Avoid the first-day friction.

  • Do not assume every small shop accepts foreign cards directly.
  • Metro is usually easier than taxi during peak traffic.
  • Save your hotel name and address in Chinese before leaving the airport.
  • Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Shanghai South are different railway stations; confirm the exact station on every ticket.
